Toxicity Profile for n-Heptanoic acid (1993)
Abstract
Concentrated solutions of the acid have been described as eye and skin irritants in man, and lung irritation has been reported in rats following inhalation. It was of low acute oral toxicity in rodents; limited studies involving repeated administration also found a low level of toxicity. Central nervous system effects occurred in rats and mice following injection of the acid or its sodium salt. A very limited report suggests that the acid was not carcinogenic when tested in a long-term dermal study in mice. It was mutagenic to mammalian cells in culture but not in Ames bacterial tests.
