Toxicity Profile for Barium sulphate (1994)

Abstract

Barium sulphate was of low acute oral toxicity in rats. Limited studies in rodents involving repeated oral or inhalation exposure failed to identify any overt toxic or reproductive effects. In man, a similar low acute oral toxicity is indicated. The inhalation of the dust can lead to mild lung effects (baritosis) which are, however, potentially reversible and invariably non-debilitating. Tissue inflammation (benign granulomas) can result from the impaction of barium sulphate particles.

What are Toxicity Profiles?

Toxicity Profiles are comprehensive, yet concise, monographs on the hazard potential of individual chemicals. They are written by scientists specially trained in the evaluation of toxicity data and are prepared principally from primary information sources.
