Toxicity Profile for 6-Methylcoumarin (1995)
Abstract
6-Methylcoumarin was slightly irritating to rabbit skin. In man, it has caused skin sensitization reactions in the presence of ultraviolet light. It was of moderate to low acute toxicity to rats by the oral route and of low acute toxicity by the dermal route to rabbits. Repeated oral administration caused liver, bile duct and testes effects in rats and liver damage in a dog. There was no evidence of carcinogenicity in a limited feeding study in rats. Chromosomal damage has been induced in mammalian cells in culture, although this was not confirmed in mice treated by injection. In an Ames bacterial test, it showed weak mutagenicity.
