Toxicity Profile for Isovaleric acid and its common salts (1988)
Abstract
Neat isovaleric acid was a skin irritant in rabbits and guinea-pigs and a mild eye irritant in rabbits. A diluted solution did not irritate or sensitize human skin. It was of moderate to low acute toxicity by the oral route to rats, dermally to rabbits and by injection to mice. Increased urine pH and decreased blood pigment (haemoglobin) levels were seen in rats following repeated ingestion of the sodium salt.
