Toxicity Profile for Hydrochloric acid (1990)
Abstract
Hydrochloric acid caused irritation and damage to the skin, eyes, respiratory tract and upper gastro-intestinal tract of humans and laboratory animals. Ingestion of the concentrated acid has caused death in some individuals, and repeated oral administration evidently induced kidney effects in children. It was of moderate acute oral toxicity in rabbits. Repeated skin application in mice has resulted in local tumours, but oral administration did not promote the activity of a known carcinogen. Chromosomal damage and mutations were induced in mammalian cells in culture and in the fruit fly. There was no clear evidence of genotoxic activity in bacterial assays including an Ames test.
