N-Vinylpyrrolidone (1989)
Abstract
N-Vinylpyrrolidone was irritant to the eyes of rabbits and to the upper respiratory tract of rats. Acute oral toxicity in rodents was moderate to low. Acute toxicity by the dermal and inhalation routes was moderate in rabbits and rats respectively. Studies on repeated oral and inhalation exposure to rats showed effects on the liver, nasal linings, kidneys and blood. Limited inhalation studies have indicated that N-vinylpyrrolidone may be carcinogenic to the liver of rats. It gave no evidence of genotoxicity in a range of screening assays in mammalian cells in culture and was not mutagenic in bacterial tests (including Ames tests) or in assays using fruit flies.
