Toxicity Profile for Carmoisine (1990)
Abstract
Carmoisine induced a recurrence of symptoms when given orally to three patients with skin complaints. It was of low acute oral toxicity in rodents. Repeated oral administration to mice and rats caused effects in various organs including kidney and bladder damage, and tissue changes in the spleen and adrenals. No reproductive effects were seen in rats or rabbits treated orally. There was no convincing evidence of carcinogenicity in mice and rats given repeated oral doses. A range of genotoxicity screening assays (including several Ames bacterial tests) have generally given no indication of activity.
