Toxicity Profile for 2,5-Dimethylfuran (2002)
Abstract
2,5-Dimethylfuran caused eye damage and was probably a severe skin irritant in rabbits. In acute studies, it exhibited a moderate oral and inhalation toxicity in rats and a moderate dermal toxicity in guinea-pigs. A limited investigation involving repeated oral administration to rats evidently found no neurotoxic effects. 2,5-Dimethylfuran induced chromosome effects in mammalian cells in culture, and DNA damage in bacteria. There was no evidence of mutagenicity in (limited) Ames bacterial tests.

What are Toxicity Profiles?
Toxicity Profiles are comprehensive, yet concise, monographs on the hazard potential of individual chemicals.
They are written by scientists specially trained in the evaluation of toxicity data and are prepared principally from primary information sources.
