Toxicity Profile for 2-Chlorophenol (1990)
Abstract
2-Chlorophenol was of moderate acute oral toxicity in laboratory animals causing central nervous system effects. Repeated oral exposure of rats affected the blood, caused liver damage, and inhibited cell replication in the bone marrow. Oral exposure of rats prior to mating and during pregnancy resulted in decreased litter size and increased the number of stillbirths. In limited feeding studies, 2-chlorophenol gave no conclusive evidence of carcinogenicity in rats, but it enhanced the action of known carcinogens. 2-Chlorophenol caused chromosome damage in rats treated orally and in mammalian cells in culture. No mutagenicity was demonstrated in Ames bacterial tests.
