Toxicity Profile for 2,4-Dichlorophenol (1990)

Abstract

2,4-Dichlorophenol was of low acute oral toxicity in rats and mice and caused central nervous system effects. In rodents, repeated oral exposure caused liver and kidney damage, bone marrow degeneration and blood effects. Oral exposure during pregnancy caused foetal toxicity in rats whereas foetal skeletal abnormalities and decreased foetal weight were induced when mice were treated by injection during pregnancy. There was no evidence of carcinogenicity in rats or mice treated orally. 2,4-Dichlorophenol did not cause chromosome damage in mice treated orally, but produced mutations and chromosomal effects in mammalian cells in culture. Weak mutagenic activity was demonstrated in Ames bacterial tests.
