Toxicity Profile for Gallium arsenide (1992)

Abstract

Gallium arsenide was of low acute oral toxicity in mice and rats. Direct instillation into the windpipe caused lung damage, liver effects, enzyme inhibition and suppression of the immune system in rodents. Mice and rats given repeated inhalation exposures showed tissue changes in the lungs, larynx and bone marrow, increased iron deposits in the liver and spleen, degeneration of testicular tissue (with a resultant reduction in sperm count) and alterations in the oestrus cycle. Inhalation by rodents during pregnancy resulted in developmental toxicity, generally at concentrations which were maternally toxic. There was no evidence of mutagenicity in an Ames bacterial test.
