5-Methyl-3-heptanone (1995)Abstract5-Methyl-3-heptanone has caused eye and respiratory tract irritation in humans and laboratory animals, and skin irritation in rabbits. Skin sensitization was not induced in guinea-pigs given repeated treatments with dilute solutions of "ethyl amyl ketone". Exposure to the vapours of 5-methyl-3-heptanone has caused headache and nausea in volunteers. In laboratory animals, it was of low acute oral and dermal toxicity and moderate-low acute inhalation toxicity. Signs of toxicity in rats following acute and repeated inhalation exposure included effects on the central nervous system and degenerative changes in the sciatic and tibial nerves. Toxicity Profiles are comprehensive, yet concise, monographs on the hazard potential of individual chemicals. They are written by scientists specially trained in the evaluation of toxicity data and are prepared principally from primary information sources.
