Toxicity Profile for Madder (1994)

Abstract

Madder caused allergic contact dermatitis in individuals handling the plant. Various madder preparations have induced DNA damage when given orally to mice and when incubated with mammalian or bacterial cells. Madder extracts were mutagenic in Ames bacterial tests, but did not produce chromosome damage when injected into mice.
