Toxicity Profile for Green S (1991)
Abstract
Green S was of low acute oral toxicity in rats. Repeated oral administration to rodents caused mild effects principally in the kidneys, thyroid, liver and gastro-intestinal tract. Green S did not induce any marked reproductive effects in rats treated orally, and foetal development was unaffected. There was no convincing evidence of carcinogenic activity following oral administration in a comprehensive study in mice and in limited studies in rats. One commercial sample showed weak mutagenic activity in the Ames bacterial test, but other samples gave no evidence of genotoxicity in this and other bacterial screening tests.
