Toxicity Profile for Pigment Yellow 83 (1996)
Abstract
Pigment Yellow 83 produced at most only slight skin irritation, but was a moderate eye irritant in rabbits. A dilute preparation did not induce sensitization in guinea pigs. Pigment Yellow 83 was of low acute oral toxicity in rats and mice, and gave no evidence of carcinogenicity in limited studies. No 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine (an animal carcinogen, which could theoretically be formed by metabolic azo reduction of the pigment) could be detected in the urine of rats treated orally. However, decomposition to 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine can occur when polymers containing the pigment are heated above 200°C.
