Toxicity Profile for Potassium hydroxide (1991)

Abstract

Potassium hydroxide caused eye burns in man and skin damage in rabbits. Ingestion led to severe mouth and throat damage in one individual. Potassium hydroxide was of moderate acute oral toxicity in rats. There was some evidence that it caused chromosomal damage in mammalian cells in culture by increasing the pH of the culture solution. Skin cancer developed in mice given repeated local applications although apparently not in rats treated similarly. Repeated injection of a dilute solution did not induce skin sensitization in guinea-pigs.
