Toxicity Profile for Ponceau 4R (1993)
Abstract
Ponceau 4R given orally has been shown to exacerbate the condition of patients already suffering from dermatitis, and possibly of those with asthma. It was of low acute oral toxicity in mice and rats although repeated oral administration produced mild anaemia, slight kidney damage, and to a lesser extent, effects on the liver. Anaemia was also seen in pigs treated orally. Feeding studies revealed no convincing evidence of reproductive toxicity or carcinogenicity in rats or mice. Chromosome damage was reported in mice treated by intraperitoneal injection, but there was no indication of genotoxicity in bacterial screening tests (including the Ames test).
