Sorbitan trioleate (1994)AbstractSorbitan trioleate was only mildly irritating to the skin and eyes of rabbits and was of low acute oral toxicity in rats. Human volunteer studies suggested a low skin sensitizing and irritant potential. A single benign skin tumour that was possibly treatment-induced was seen in a 52-wk mouse skin painting study involving daily application of sorbitan trioleate. In rats, repeated injections produced effects on the blood and spleen. A range of other sorbitan fatty acid esters have demonstrated a low toxicity in repeated oral studies in rats. Toxicity Profiles are comprehensive, yet concise, monographs on the hazard potential of individual chemicals. They are written by scientists specially trained in the evaluation of toxicity data and are prepared principally from primary information sources.
