1-Phenoxy-2-propanol was of low acute oral toxicity in rats. Repeated oral administration produced sedation and abnormal gait in rats and increased liver weight in rabbits. Multiple skin applications to rabbits caused paralysis and reduced body temperature. According to summary reports, repeated oral administration to pregnant rats and rabbits resulted in no foetal effects. 1-Phenoxy-2-propanol was only minimally irritant to the skin of rabbits but caused marked effects when instilled into the rabbit eye. Dilute solutions did not induce skin sensitization in guinea-pigs.
