The alpha– and beta-cyclodextrins produced kidney damage in rats and rabbits when administered by injection. They are poorly absorbed in their intact form from the gastro-intestinal tract and their oral toxicity is low. Orally administered beta-cyclodextrin gave no evidence of reproductive toxicity or genotoxicity in rats.
