Benzyl butyrate did not induce skin sensitization in humans when tested as a dilute solution. The neat material evidently caused skin irritation in one individual, but was not irritating when applied to the skin of rabbits. In acute studies in laboratory animals, benzyl butyrate was of low oral and dermal toxicity, although central nervous system effects were noted in rats following oral exposure. According to citations, there was no obvious toxicity in limited studies involving repeated oral administration to rats.
