gamma-Undecalactone produced skin irritation, but did not induce sensitization in volunteers treated with a low concentration. In rats, it was of low acute oral toxicity, with repeated oral administration causing blood effects. gamma-Undecalactone did not produce chromosome damage in mice treated by injection or in mammalian cells in culture. No mutagenicity was seen in bacterial tests including the Ames assay, although it did produce evidence of DNA damage in another bacterial assay.
