n-Dodecyl mercaptan was irritating to human skin. It has demonstrated skin sensitizing potential in humans and guinea-pigs. It was of low acute toxicity by the oral route in rats and mice. In repeated inhalation studies rats had liver, kidney, lung, heart and brain changes. According to limited reports of inhalation studies, no reproductive toxicity was seen in rats, mice or dogs. It was not mutagenic in an Ames test, nor in mammalian cells treated in culture.
