Tolyltriazole was an eye irritant in rabbits and slightly irritated rabbit skin. In inhalation studies, signs of respiratory irritation were seen in rats and mice. Tolyltriazole did not induce skin sensitization in guinea-pigs treated by injection. A moderate acute oral toxicity was demonstrated in rats. Tolyltriazole was not genotoxic to mammalian cells in culture, but was mutagenic in Ames bacterial tests; 5-methylbenzotriazole did not cause chromosome aberrations in mammalian cells and gave no convincing evidence of mutagenicity in the Ames test.
