Triacetin was of moderate or low acute oral and dermal toxicity in laboratory animals. Limited studies in rats suggest that triacetin was well tolerated in the diet and when inhaled. It was not mutagenic in an Ames bacterial test. In general, triacetin has given evidence of, at worst, minimal skin and eye irritation in humans and rabbits. One case of eczema has been reported following occupational contact, although no evidence of sensitizing potential was detected in volunteer or animal studies.
