Scientists at EFSA have completed the first stage of a comprehensive safety review of over 2,000 flavouring substances used in the EU, from which the European Commission will establish a positive list of flavouring agents that can continue to be used. Further data have been requested on around 400 substances to allow completion of the evaluations. The next task for EFSA will be to assess applications for the authorisation of additional flavourings, based on guidelines that have been finalised following an on-line consultation and workshop.
