EFSA, as requested by the European Commission, has provided a scientific opinion on the safety and bioavailability of silver hydrosol (an aqueous suspension of positively charged silver ions and silver metal particles) as a source of silver in nutritional food supplements. The silver is considered to be within the nano range, however full characterisation was not provided. In addition, the toxicological studies evaluated were considered inadequate for the risk assessment of silver hydrosol and, whilst a gastric disappearance study was performed in six healthy adults, it did not provide any data on the systemic absorption of silver hydrosol as such. Therefore, neither the bioavailability of silver hydrosol nor its safety in food supplements could be established.
