EFSA has reviewed the terminology, methodologies and frameworks developed by national and international agencies to assess the human health risks associated with combined exposure to multiple chemicals. Recommendations for future work include:

  • developing harmonised terminology and methodologies for human and ecological risk assessments
  • assessing risks of exposure to multiple chemicals together with other stressors (e.g. biological hazards and physical agents)
  • gaining better knowledge on the mode/mechanism of action of multiple substances
  • providing guidance on uncertainty analysis for hazard assessment and risk characterisation
