EFSA has re-evaluated the tolerable daily intake (TDI) of phenol. A TDI of 1.5 mg/kg bw was set by EFSA’s predecessor, the Scientific Committee for Food (SCF), back in 1984, and several new studies have become available since. The benchmark dose level for a 10% reduction in maternal body weight gain (BMDL10) of 52 mg/kg bw/day, from a robust developmental toxicity study in orally-treated rats, was critical in deriving a new TDI of 0.5 mg/kg bw.
