2-Ethylhexyl acrylate (1994)Abstract2-Ethylhexyl acrylate was a marked skin irritant in rabbits, guinea pigs and mice. Contradictory results have been reported of its eye irritancy in rabbits. It is a skin sensitizer in man and exhibited a potent sensitizing potential in guinea pig studies involving dermal exposure. In acute studies in laboratory animals a low oral, dermal and inhalation toxicity was indicated. A limited Western study involving repeated inhalation identified no target site for toxicity in rats, whereas a long-term experiment found increased kidney disease in mice exposed dermally. Poorly reported Soviet studies noted effects on the liver, blood and nervous system of laboratory animals exposed by inhalation. Long-term dermal studies have been conducted in the West in two mouse strains, and have found clear evidence of skin carcinogenicity in one of the strains. In mammalian cells in culture there was no convincing evidence of chromosomal damage and inconsistent results have been reported for the induction of point mutations. Mutagenic potential was not detected in the bacterial Ames test. Toxicity Profiles are comprehensive, yet concise, monographs on the hazard potential of individual chemicals. They are written by scientists specially trained in the evaluation of toxicity data and are prepared principally from primary information sources.
