Toxicity Profile for Orange II (1990)
Abstract
Orange II was not irritating to the eyes or skin of rabbits. The acute oral toxicity was low in rodents. Repeated oral administration induced severe damage to red blood cells, bile duct effects and kidney and testes injury in rats whilst spleen and liver effects were seen in rats and mice. Chromosomal damage was produced in the bone marrow and sperm of mice fed Orange II. Bacterial assays (including Ames tests) have generally given no evidence of mutagenicity, but one Ames test did give indications of weak activity. Limited skin-painting and oral studies in mice gave no convincing evidence of carcinogenicity.
