Toxicity Profile for Toluidine Red (1996)

Abstract

Toluidine Red may produce skin sensitization reactions in man and can be irritating to the skin. It was a mild eye irritant in rabbits. In rats, the acute oral toxicity was low. Repeated oral administration produced effects on the blood, spleen, kidney and liver of rats and mice, and the ovaries of mice. An Ames bacterial test has given evidence of weak mutagenicity, but no chromosome effects were seen in mammalian cells in culture. Long-term dietary administration resulted in the development of tumours of the liver, skin, adrenals and Zymbal gland in rats and kidney and thyroid tumours in mice.

What are Toxicity Profiles?

Toxicity Profiles are comprehensive, yet concise, monographs on the hazard potential of individual chemicals. They are written by scientists specially trained in the evaluation of toxicity data and are prepared principally from primary information sources.
