Toxicity Profile for Lead naphthenate (1999)
Abstract
Occupational exposure to lead naphthenate has been tentatively linked with systemic effects (including central nervous system disorders) typical of lead intoxication. Multiple skin applications of a dilute preparation did not induce skin sensitization or irritation in volunteers. Lead naphthenate had a low acute oral toxicity in rats. Repeated skin application has caused local irritation and increased testis weight in rats and kidney damage in mice. A limited study where lead naphthenate was applied repeatedly to the skin of mice has given equivocal evidence of carcinogenicity. Lead naphthenate was not mutagenic in an Ames bacterial assay.
