Toxicity Profile for para-Aminoazobenzene (1989)
Abstract
para-Aminoazobenzene has given evidence of being a skin sensitizer. Dilute solutions were not irritant to human and rat skin. Acute oral toxicity was moderate in mice and single doses injected (intraperitoneally) into rats reduced the blood's oxygen supplying capacity. Effects on the liver, spleen, kidneys, blood and menstrual cycle have been seen following repeated oral administration to rats. Repeated administration produced liver and other tumours in rats and mice treated orally and in mice given injections or dermal applications. There were no adverse effects on the pups of pregnant mice injected with para-aminoazobenzene. Positive results were seen in a wide range of genotoxicity screening assays including Ames tests.
