Toxicity Profile for Octyl gallate (1989)
Abstract
Octyl gallate has demonstrated both an irritant and sensitizing potential on the skin of man. Mucous membrane reactions have also been recorded. The acute oral toxicity in rats was low but effects were seen on the liver, kidney and spleen. Repeated oral administration failed to identify convincingly any specific target organs although mild anaemia in one group of rats may have been treatment-related. In a multi-generation reproduction study in rats treated orally, decreased pup survival was seen at weaning. Limited feeding studies found no evidence of carcinogenic activity in rats. There was no indication of DNA damage in a bacterial assay.
