5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (2000)
Abstract
The acute oral toxicity of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural was low in rodents. Repeated feeding to rats caused slight changes in blood biochemistry and liver function. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural has given conflicting results in Ames bacterial tests for mutagenicity. In mammalian cells in culture, there was evidence of a weak mutagenic and chromosome damaging action. There were no adequate examinations of carcinogenic potential, although indications of cancer initiating activity have been generated by preliminary studies involving oral exposure of rats or skin painting in mice.
