Toxicity Profile for Xylometazoline and its hydrochloride (1989)
Abstract
Dilute solutions of xylometazoline and its hydrochloride have been regularly used as nasal sprays without, apparently, damaging the nose membranes. However, these sprays have caused various central nervous systems effects in several patients, and resulted in breathing difficulties and high blood pressure in a one-month-old child. Blood accumulation in the organs occurred in a man who died after an intravenous injection of xylometazoline hydrochloride. Xylometazoline was of moderate acute oral toxicity in mice. No studies have been carried out to investigate genotoxic potential.
