Toxicity Profile for 2-Ethyl-1,3-hexanediol (1991)
Abstract
2-Ethyl-1,3-hexanediol was an eye irritant in rabbits, a skin irritant in man, mice and rabbits and a nasal irritant in rats. It gave some indication of skin sensitizing potential in man. A low to moderate acute oral toxicity was seen in laboratory animals and a low acute dermal toxicity was recorded in rabbits. Repeated dermal exposure damaged the kidneys, liver, and testes of rabbits. 2-Ethyl-1,3-hexanediol caused foetal toxicity and malformations when administered orally or dermally to pregnant rats. Chromosome damage was evident in mammalian cells in culture, but not in rodents following intraperitoneal injection. No mutagenicity was demonstrated in Ames bacterial tests.
