On 1 April 2008, HSE became the single UK regulatory body for promoting health and safety at work following its merger with the Health and Safety Commission (HSC). In a further re-organisation, the Pesticides Safety Directorate (PSD) has been transferred to the HSE and is now an internal, though distinct, HSE agency – a move that is intended to provide more opportunity to explore “the potential synergies between regulatory science and policy for chemicals, biocides, pesticides and detergents”.
