In man, l,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT) is a sensitizer causing contact dermatitis, and a skin irritant. Formulations containing BIT demonstrated a weak sensitizing potential in a guinea-pig screening test, and were skin irritants. A moderate acute toxicity was seen in rodents given BIT orally.
