2-Methyl-5-ethylpyridine (MEP) caused severe skin and eye irritation in rabbits. It was of moderate acute oral toxicity in mice and rats, and of low to moderate acute dermal toxicity in rabbits. Blood changes evidently occurred in rats given repeated oral doses, whilst treatment of pregnant rats resulted in the death of their offspring. MEP induced chromosome damage and DNA effects in human blood cells in culture, and chromosome effects in yeast.
