Acetic anhydride is corrosive, although the appearance of symptoms may be delayed. It has caused permanent eye damage in at least one individual. Its acute systemic toxicity was moderate in rats treated orally and in rabbits treated dermally. There was no evidence of mutagenicity in bacterial assays (including Ames tests).
