The acute oral toxicity of these substances was low in mice. Toxic effects were not clearly demonstrated in limited studies involving repeated oral administration of beta-apo-8′-carotenal in the dog. According to brief unpublished reports of feeding studies in rats, the only toxicological effects of short-term, long-term, and multigeneration administration of beta-apo-8’-carotenal, or its methyl ester, was a reduction in testes weight. Pigment deposition occurred in various tissues, including the liver and kidney of rats and dogs. Neither beta-apo-8’ carotenal nor its methyl ester was mutagenic in an Ames bacterial test.
