Black PN was of low acute oral toxicity in rodents. Studies involving repeated oral administration in rats showed weight changes in a variety of organs, particularly the liver and kidney, which were not associated with any abnormal tissue changes. Repeated oral administration gave no convincing indications of toxicity in mice, whereas in pigs there was some effect on the small intestine. No evidence of reproductive toxicity was found in rats treated orally. Carcinogenic activity was not seen in limited long-term oral studies in rats and mice. In general, Black PN gave no indication of genotoxicity in a range of screening studies, including Ames bacterial tests.
