Brown HT was of low acute oral toxicity in rodents. Repeated oral administration to rats caused various organ weight changes, kidney effects, brown colouration of the gastro-intestinal tract, lymphatic system, liver and kidneys, and anaemia. Mice fed multiple doses of Brown HT showed slight liver tissue changes and colouration of the intestines, lymphatic system, ovaries and uterus. There was no conclusive evidence of reproductive toxicity or carcinogenicity in mice and rats treated orally. A number of bacterial assays, including Ames mutagenicity tests, gave no evidence of genotoxicity.
