Calcium chloride was irritant and caused damage to the skin but concentrated solutions did not irritate the eye of humans. Acute oral toxicity was low to moderate in rats, rabbits and dogs but stomach irritation has been reported in patients ingesting the chloride. In general, no effects were seen in a range of genotoxicity screening assays including the Ames bacterial test.
