Camphene provided no evidence of sensitizing potential in volunteer studies involving dermal application of dilute solutions. The neat material caused slight irritation when in contact with the skin of rabbits. In acute studies, camphene was of low oral toxicity in rats and of low dermal toxicity in rabbits. A limited report indicated some evidence of mutagenic potential in a bacterial Ames assay.
