Camauba wax is a rare skin sensitizer in man, but has not caused skin irritation, and when present in formulations has given no indication of eye irritancy in rabbits. A low acute oral toxicity was seen in rats. On repeated administration in the diet it did not produce any notable toxic effects in rats or dogs. There was no indication of reproductive or developmental toxicity in rats. Camauba wax failed to induce chromosome damage in mammalian cells in culture and showed no convincing genotoxic activity in bacterial assays (including the Ames test) or in yeast.
