In man, chloroxylenol has caused skin irritation and cases of allergic contact dermatitis have been noted. Acute oral poisoning in humans by chloroxylenol-containing formulations have proved fatal. Chloroxylenol was a skin and eye irritant in rabbits and of low acute oral and dermal toxicity in rats and rabbits. Changes in the blood cellular composition have been seen following repeated oral and dermal exposure. Reproductive effects were noted in rats following oral administration. No evidence of mutagenicity was reported in limited bacterial tests (Ames).
