[-two_thirds]Diethyl ketone was irritating to the human eye and respiratory tract and in rabbits caused slight skin irritation and severe eye damage. A volunteer study using a dilute solution provided no evidence of a sensitization potential. Low acute oral and dermal toxicity was demonstrated in laboratory animals. There were no neurotoxic effects in rats given repeated oral doses. A limited injection study in mice gave some suggestion of a-n embryotoxic action. Genotoxic activity has been detected in yeast cells.
